Where to Park in Gosforth: The Insider's Guide
Gosforth has over 1,400 parking spaces if you know where to look. Here's the local knowledge on free spots, cheap car parks, and the times to avoid.
Finding a parking spot in Gosforth can feel impossible on a Saturday morning — but the truth is, there are over 1,400 spaces within walking distance of the High Street. The trick is knowing which ones are free, which are cheap, and which ones most people walk straight past. Here's the insider's guide.
The Shopping Centre Car Park
The Gosforth Central Shopping Centre car park is the most obvious option — and the first hour is free. After that, charges apply via an ANPR (number plate recognition) system, so keep an eye on the time. There are 6 disabled bays and 4 parent-and-child bays with lift access to the shops. It's fine for a quick errand, but don't linger.
Best for: Quick High Street trips under an hour.
Regent Centre — The £1 All-Day Secret
This is the one most people don't know about. The Regent Centre car park has 183 spaces and costs just £1 for the entire day. After 5pm it's free. Open 7am–12:45am. It's a 5–10 minute walk to the High Street, but for all-day parking at a pound, it's unbeatable. Eight accessible spaces available.
Best for: All-day parking, evening events at the Civic Theatre, swimming at the leisure centre.
Library and Swimming Pool Car Park
Behind the library and Gosforth Leisure Centre on Regent Farm Road, there's a car park with 59 spaces (3 disabled) at just 20p per hour, maximum 3 hours. Charges only apply 8am–5pm — outside those hours it's free. This is a useful spot for the leisure centre, Civic Theatre, and the northern end of the High Street.
Best for: Swimming, library visits, Civic Theatre, cheap short stays.
Salters Road Car Park
Tucked off Salters Road, this council car park has 81 spaces (7 disabled) at 30p per hour, maximum 3 hours. Free after 6pm. It's well-positioned for the middle of the High Street — close to Gosforth Traders, Deli Espresso, and Canny Crafty. Often quieter than the shopping centre.
Best for: Mid–High Street shopping, Salters Road cafes and restaurants.
St Nicholas Avenue Car Park
Just off the High Street down St Nicholas Avenue, this smaller car park has 69 spaces (4 disabled) at 30p per hour, maximum 2 hours. Free after 6pm. It also has 2 electric vehicle charging points — one of the few EV charging spots near the High Street. Well-placed for the southern end of the centre.
Best for: Southern High Street, EV charging, quick trips.
Sainsbury's Car Park
The Sainsbury's Local on Salters Road has 95 spaces (5 disabled, plus 5 parent-and-child) at 30p per hour, maximum 2 hours. Free after 4:30pm (closes 9pm weekdays, 8pm Saturdays). Handy if you're doing a Sainsbury's shop and want to pop to the High Street, but watch the time limit.
Best for: Combined Sainsbury's shop and High Street visit.
Free On-Street Parking
This is where local knowledge really pays off. According to a SPACE for Gosforth survey, there are over 750 on-street spaces around the High Street area. The breakdown:
Completely free, no time limit: 203 spaces on residential streets slightly away from the centre. These fill up during the day but are reliable early morning or after 4pm.
Free but time-limited (2 hours, 8am–6:30pm): 119 spaces on streets closer to the centre. Good for a focused shopping trip.
Free at specific times only: 325 spaces that are restricted during school drop-off and pick-up times (11:30am–1:30pm and 3:30pm–5pm are free windows). These are the hidden gems — available for parking during midday and early afternoon when the restrictions lift.
Paid on-street (30p/hour, 2-hour max): 92 spaces on and near the High Street itself.
Evening and Weekend Tips
Almost all parking in Gosforth becomes free after 6pm (6:30pm for on-street bays). If you're heading out for dinner, a Civic Theatre show, or a Friday evening on the High Street, parking is rarely a problem. Weekend mornings are the busiest time — arrive before 10am or after 2pm for the easiest runs.
The Commuter Hack: Regent Centre Park & Ride
If you live further out and want to visit Gosforth without driving in, the Regent Centre Park & Ride is right next to the Metro and bus interchange. Park for £1, take the Metro one stop to South Gosforth, or catch a bus along the High Street.
