Gosforth.live·

Gosforth is blessed with a proper range of pubs — from traditional High Street locals with cask ales and live sport to award-winning gastropubs with craft beer menus and beer gardens worth fighting for on a sunny afternoon. Whether you're after a quiet midweek pint, a Sunday roast with the family, or somewhere to watch the match, there's a Gosforth pub that fits the bill.

Here's our guide to the best.

The Brandling Villa

If you could only visit one pub in the Gosforth area, many locals would point you to the Villa. Tucked away on Haddricks Mill Road in South Gosforth, it has built a fiercely loyal following thanks to its ever-changing selection of cask beers — brewed on-site at their own Overkill Brewing microbrewery in the cellar — one of the biggest whisky collections in the North East, and food that goes well beyond standard pub fare. The burgers are legendary.

The beer garden is one of the best in Newcastle, and the events calendar is packed: live music, comedy nights, film seasons, retro gaming evenings, and quiz nights. Dog and kid friendly throughout. It won North East Pub of the Year and it's not hard to see why.

Best for: Craft beer, burgers, beer garden sessions, live music and events.

The Brandling Arms

A Gosforth High Street institution since the 1920s, the Brandling Arms is thought to have once been a stable house for the wealthy Brandling family. Today it's a stylish, well-run pub open seven days a week from midday, serving British classics, sharing platters, and a proper Sunday roast. The drinks list covers cask ales, craft beers, wines, and cocktails.

The spacious beer garden comes into its own in summer, and the Wednesday quiz night (8pm, £2 per person, £60 bar tab for the winners) is one of the most popular in Gosforth. There's also a private function room for up to 50 guests. A reliable, comfortable local that does everything well.

Best for: Sunday roasts, quiz nights, beer garden, a relaxed all-rounder.

The Gosforth Hotel

Right at the heart of the High Street, the Gosforth Hotel is Gosforth's go-to pub for live sport. Big screens throughout make it a buzzing spot on match days, but it's more than just a sports pub. The cask ale selection is impressive — they stock beers from a wide range of local breweries including Wylam, Mordue, Tyne Bank, Big Lamp, and Cullercoats, alongside national favourites.

The food menu has been updated in recent years, with generous Sunday roasts drawing a loyal crowd. The outdoor seating area catches the afternoon sun, and the atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious. A proper local that's been at the centre of the community for generations.

Best for: Live sport, cask ale, a proper local atmosphere.

The County

A handsome, historic Greene King pub at 70 High Street with a real sense of occasion. The County has been beautifully maintained, with a classic pub interior that rewards a longer look — all dark wood, brass fittings, and period details. The beer garden is a peaceful spot tucked behind the building, and there's a car park for those driving.

The food menu covers pub classics done well, and they typically have six regular beers plus six changing guest ales on tap. Dog-friendly and family-friendly, with Sky Sports and TNT Sports for those who want to catch a game. It's slightly more spacious and relaxed than some High Street alternatives — a good pick when you want a bit more room.

Best for: A spacious, classic pub setting, beer garden, guest ales.

The Queen Victoria

Dating back to 1825, the Queen Vic at 204-206 High Street has been given a new lease of life following a major refurbishment. The result is a family-friendly pub with a contemporary feel but plenty of character, serving traditional pub classics, a solid desserts menu, and award-winning kids' dishes.

The drinks list is broad — cask ales, craft beers, ciders, wines, and cocktails — and there's a dog-friendly beer garden out back. A function room upstairs makes it a good option for group bookings and parties. Open from 11am Monday to Saturday and noon on Sundays.

Best for: Families, a refurbished classic, group bookings.

The Three Mile Inn

If you're looking for space, the Three Mile on the Great North Road has it in abundance. This large, family-friendly pub and restaurant has an extensive menu covering everything from steaks and burgers to curries, fish and chips, and a dedicated children's menu. The outdoor seating area and play space make it particularly good for families with young children.

Winner of North East Pub of the Year in 2023, it combines reliable food with a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. Function rooms are available for private events, and it's well-placed for anyone heading to or from the Town Moor. Open seven days a week from 11am.

Best for: Families with children, a big menu, outdoor play space.
